When designing the new Severance Middle School, saving money by using energy efficient building materials and design flexibility were top priorities. R-Control SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels) were selected for the roof system to help accomplish this goal.

R-Control SIPs were used on the roof’s rotunda providing long spans and a continuous wood surface without thermal breaks. Because SIPs are fast to install, contractors set the R-Control SIPs on the rotunda in less than an hour. A total of 11,236 square feet of R-Control SIPs were used in the project.

R-Control SIPs not only provide a strong structural roof system, but they also provide a high R-value. The solid construction system of R-Control SIPs blocks wind and moisture, providing optimum comfort for temperature, noise and dust control. Heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems can be downsized with R-Control SIPs, creating significant energy savings.
